Determining the status of lost files before recovery
Before one can attempt erased data recovery, they must first determine whether the information they are hoping to find and restore is actually erased. When we speak of erasing file information we generally think in terms of files that have been put through a software application known as a shredder. A file shredder overwrites the area a file was contained in dozens of times until the original file information is no longer recognizable. In cases where file information has been shredded, recovery of files is completely impossible. In cases where the file has merely been deleted, the original information usually remains intact and is available for various types of file recovery.
